Nice site but I do have a problem with the review. It's a very ignorant statement to say Flash is totally needless when there are literally millions of websites that not only incorporate Flash in some way, not to mention the ones that are built completely in Flash. People whose Flash skills are above beginner level understand the full capabilities and great future of this medium.

If Flash is so needless.. then why does he use Flash..?

Hey party people. Don't sweat it. Yes, SB posted in error, but I think his comment was towards the functionality and nav built in xhtml. But the irony is not lost, I laughed when I read Magnus' error catching comment...

BTW Joe, SB can do whatever he wants. Please... homeboy is pushing out a good site that keeps me and you coming back, registering and posting.

What's wrong with a little bit of personal opnion and hyperbole sometimes?

Don't get me wrong, Styleboost is loaded with Flash-heavy sites. Probably more than of the sites here rely on the technology. Still, after what's been happening with other technologies (such as Javascript, HTML, CSS) over the past couple of years, my guess is that Flash is a technology primarily used for advertising purposes in a [very] few years. As for Shaun Inman's site, I referred to his implementation of the "Navigate/Search"-areas. BTW does he use flash on this site? Where? I believe you, but I couldn't find it.

Just save the site to your computer and check the sites files - he is using flash. The browser displays DIN even if its not installed - though its just a tiny bit of flash. read about it on his site...very interesting

Some of the headlines/date-taggs use Flash. He's got a flashchecker so if you don't have flash, the headlines will show helvetica, arial. I belive he is using a scriptpackage available for download somewhere on the internet..

The latest version of the flash replacement script is here: http://www.mikeindustries.com/sifr/ Shaun was the original inventor: Mike & friends rewrote the code. Non sure what version Shaun is using on his (nice) site now.

i like the colors of the site. mysig sida

 #9 Daniel Wilcox on June 23, 2005

er, he uses sIFR to display funky fonts on his site without using images....

 #10 Steven Woods on June 24, 2005

Wonder why he use this flash-replacement thingy instead of just using a php/GD script to dynamicly create pictures with the right text/font...

 #11 Magnus on June 25, 2005

The swf is cached and used for all the replacements, i think. Less work for the server, less trips to the server and less kb to dowload.

 #12 Lit _ on June 25, 2005

You can also cashe images created in GD/php... I belive this is more casheable than swf's with dynamic content..

 #13 Magnus on June 26, 2005

And you can copy and paste the text created with the .swf file - cant do that with a dynamically created image.
