Conservation architect Christian Randall just launched his new Flashfolio. This one really stands out in how it relies on photos as navigation on a site for someone who's not primarily a photographer. I like how this is done and I like how the subtle hiding of the left column/navigation. Site by Sam Dallyn.
OK, but not the best.
The concept is sound but the layout grid is weak. The interactions are cute but really don't add any value. I reckon it's just too much work on motion graphics without really opening up strong interactions or a unique way to engage with an impressive body of work.
The photos are excellent, Randall himself is very impressive, the concept of light on white is good for this space; it's the interaction design that lets it down.
I like how you can show/hide the navigation...but trying to select a photo drove me nuts. Why do the other photos fade out as I mouse away from them? Argh...makes it so much harder to navigate. It's neat if you're playing a game, but that's not what this is.
What's with everyone complaining about 'strong grids' all of a sudden? This is the third site in a row I've read on Styleboost where people are bashing the 'weak grid' or whatever.
It just seems like every other site is a "minimalistic" idea. Yea, its clean, but its also boring. Useless clutter is bad, interesting content and solid layout is good.
What's most interesting to me are the comments posted by users of the MTV site. They don't seem to be very happy.
This one does not ring any bells.... First of all it's visually boring, navigation is hard. It's too bad because the content is excelent.
