Ellie; you basically need good time, loads of espresso, patience a macbook pro, photoshop and a wacom cintique. the illustration was done in photoshop using 3pt hard brush strokes. its of course shades that are made on top of photographs. the poster was done by halvor bodin, håvard gjeldseth did the web, where the illustration effect is actually a layer overlay effect and not a real illustration due to the amount of images and how long it would have taken to do.
