The guys at LayerVault have created one of the best examples of a beautifully designed flat interfaces I've ever encountered. If you haven't already, you really should check out LayerVault. Make sure to have a look at their blog, their designer news service and their open source projects as well.

As always with MailChimp's designs, their annual report is a beauty to behold. They also managed to strip away everything but the bare essentials, which is a big plus in my book. My main gripe with sites like this one that have dynamically changing backgrounds, is that it's basically impossible to capture a full page screenshot. Damn you for making my life harder, MailChimp! Damn you!

It's refreshing to see such a stripped down portfolio site as Awkward. You may have heard of their baby, Shipment, which is a similarly beautiful web app. Awkward is minimal, flat, full of white space and definitely not awkward. Hot stuff!

Medium is the hot new venture from The Obvious Corporation. In fact, they are attempting to redefine online publishing as a system optimized for quality, rather than popularity. This, of course, is music to my ears. Make sure to read Ev Williams' post about the reasoning behind Medium.

The recent acquisition of ReadWriteWeb by Say Media has resulted in a wonderful redesign and rebranding into what is now known as ReadWrite. I must admit that I love the design. Rarely has a news site felt this fresh and modern. Three thumbs up for the parallax-ish scrolling technique. For more info, Fake Steve Jobs aka Dan Lyons, the new editor-in-chief of ReadWrite, has a good writeup about the new site and concept. Via Martin Berglund.

This one here is a shameless plug for my own agency's site. However, to my defence, I would like to state that I'm super proud of the site and that I only played a minor part in the final result. It was truly a team effort, where @rovdyr and @jensen2k did most of the heavy lifting. Via @MaximeDeGreve.

Lorenzo Verzini is an Italian designer & art director living in London. His portfolio pretty much kicks ass. Beautiful stuff! Via @rovdyr.

Even if I'm not using Branch as much as I should, I still consider it one of my favorite sites of 2012. I think it has so much potential when it comes to raising the bar on online discussions. This topic is something that has been occupying a lot of my time lately, and Branch is one of the most exciting takes I've seen on this so far. Also, it looks great and is full of subtly designed features that may help Branch succeed.

As Styleboost has been on hiatus for the past few months, there's quite a backlog of sites that should have been posted here a long time ago. Disqus is one such site. This is perhaps one of the most interesting experiments I've ever encountered when it comes to homepage designs. The interactive Disqus demo prominently placed in the center of the homepage just immediately pulls the user in. Not only is it a powerful visual cue, but it also quickly manages to show off the tool that is Disqus. Would be very interesting to see how well this converts new sign-ups for them.

A few weeks ago Microsoft launched a completely revamped responsive homepage design. To get the quality they wanted, they decided to hire Paravel to help them out. And what a move that was. The result couldn't have been any better. And as Nishant Kothary, project lead at Microsoft, pointed out, even John Gruber gave it two thumbs up. Trent Walton has written a post about the design process.
